Formula and Logic

This calculator uses standard Shopify pricing structures and common e-commerce profit calculations to generate estimates:

  • Monthly Plan Fee: Fixed cost based on your selected Shopify tier (Basic: $39/mo, Shopify: $105/mo, Advanced: $399/mo).
  • Transaction Fees: Calculated as (Monthly Sales × Transaction Rate) + (Number of Orders × Fixed Per-Transaction Fee). Rates vary by plan and payment gateway: Shopify Payments has lower rates, while third-party gateways add 0.5%–2% in additional fees depending on your plan.
  • Number of Orders: Derived by dividing monthly sales volume by average order value.
  • Total Costs: Sum of monthly plan fee, total transaction fees, and any additional app/subscription fees.
  • Total COGS: Monthly sales volume multiplied by your COGS percentage.
  • Net Profit: Total monthly revenue minus total COGS and total monthly costs.
  • Profit Margin: (Net Profit / Total Monthly Revenue) × 100, displayed as a percentage with a visual progress bar.

All calculations assume standard USD pricing and exclude custom Shopify Plus plans, which require direct quoting from Shopify.

Practical Notes

Apply these real-world e-commerce and trade insights to interpret your results:

  • Shopify’s transaction fees only apply to orders processed through the platform. If you sell in-person using Shopify POS, additional fees may apply.
  • Most e-commerce businesses aim for a net profit margin of 10%–20% to remain sustainable. Margins below 5% may indicate pricing or cost issues that need adjustment.
  • Third-party payment gateways often charge their own fixed and percentage fees on top of Shopify’s additional gateway fee. Factor this in if you use a gateway not listed here.
  • COGS should include all direct costs of producing or sourcing your products, including shipping to your warehouse, but exclude marketing and overhead costs.
  • Shopify occasionally offers promotional pricing for new stores, which can reduce your monthly plan fee for the first 3–12 months. Adjust your plan fee input manually if you qualify for a promotion.

Why This Tool Is Useful

  • Prepare financial projections for investors, lenders, or internal business planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this calculator include Shopify Plus pricing?

Shopify Plus pricing is custom and based on your business’s specific sales volume and needs, so it is not included in this calculator. Contact Shopify directly for a Plus quote, and add the custom monthly fee to the Additional Fees field for accurate estimates.

How do I calculate COGS for my store?

COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) includes all direct costs associated with the products you sell: sourcing or manufacturing costs, inbound shipping, customs fees, and packaging. Exclude indirect costs like marketing, rent, and salaries. For most product-based e-commerce stores, COGS falls between 30% and 60% of revenue.

Can I use this for multi-currency stores?

This calculator uses USD as the default currency. To use it for other currencies, convert all inputs to USD equivalent first, or adjust the currency symbol in the results manually after calculation. Shopify’s transaction fees may vary slightly for non-USD sales depending on your payment gateway.

Additional Guidance

Maximize the value of this tool with these best practices:

  • Update your inputs monthly as your sales volume and costs change to track profit trends over time.
  • Test different pricing scenarios: increase your average order value by 10% or reduce COGS by 5% to see how it impacts your bottom line.
  • If your profit margin is negative, consider raising product prices, switching to Shopify Payments to lower transaction fees, or reducing COGS by negotiating better supplier rates.
  • Remember that this calculator excludes overhead costs like marketing, rent, and salaries. Add these to the Additional Fees field for a more comprehensive net profit estimate.
